Hello everyone, and welcome to Planet A! I'm Greg and this is your daily dose of sustainability. Are you passionate about making a difference in the world? Then this podcast is for you. Today I'm gonna talk about something that could shape the future of our planet: The United Nations twenty thirty Agenda. So stay with me.

Let's rewind a little and start today's episode by explaining what this Agenda is about to those of you who still haven't heard of it. Back in twenty fifteen, after a lot of studies and research, world leaders understood that problems like poverty, inequality and climate change, and other major issues that the world is facing, are somehow connected. To deal with them effectively, they needed a unified plan, a plan that would englobe this web of problems affecting our planet. So, at a historic United Nations meeting in New York, they created the twenty thirty Agenda for Sustainable Development. This agenda set seventeen Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs, each with specific targets and indicators. The goal? To make the world a better place by twenty thirty. The process involved input from governments, civil society, businesses, and individuals. There were extensive discussions and negotiations to ensure that the goals would address the needs of people all around the world, while promoting environmental sustainability. The result is a guideline that governments, organizations, and communities can use to direct their efforts towards sustainable development. So who's responsible for these goals? The short answer is: everyone. We all share the same planet. The SDGs are a universal call to action. But governments are primarily responsible for implementing policies and programs to achieve the goals. And we can also help; businesses, NGOs, and individuals can do some simple, but good things that can improve the quality of life for those around them. In today's podcast we're gonna single out three goals from the seventeen goals set, to give you an example of what they are and how they work. Focusing on the environment, let me start with goal number seven, affordable and clean energy.

Since some of the UN's Global Goals are about sustainability, having renewable and cleaner energy is key. Our current use of fossil fuels is unsustainable, making it hard to improve the environment if we keep using these heavily polluting forms of energy. To act on this goal, governments have to invest in research for new, more reliable energy solutions. Governments can also create politics to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Changing from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and hydro power helps to cut down on CO-two emissions. Addressing climate change is crucial for protecting our planet and future generations. On a more personal level, we can also act on this goal, making sure we buy rechargeable electronics instead of those with single-use batteries, and also paying attention to how we're using energy on a daily basis. Turn off the lights when they're not needed!

Now, when it comes to goal thirteen, the Climate Action Goal, the focus is to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. Climate change is causing more frequent and severe weather events, rising sea levels, and disruptions to ecosystems. In some cities, it can be twelve degrees on one day and on the next one it could be thirty-one. It's crazy. To combat this, one goal, among many other actions, is that governments and society stick to their climate commitments, making sure we as humans are always working towards innovation, education and awareness. To exemplify this a little, governments can integrate climate change measures into their national policies and planning, ensuring that this issue is treated with the much needed seriousness it deserves.

Our next and final highlight is goal fifteen, Life on Land. This goal focuses on preserving terrestrial ecosystems, combating desertification, stopping and reversing land degradation and preventing biodiversity loss. This might seem distant from what a person can do, sounding more like a government thing to work on, but there are indeed things we can do to help achieve this goal! Reducing the use of paper, not buying products that are tested on animals, and reporting wildlife trafficking or illegal hunting of protected species; are all things you can do to contribute to this goal. While you do this, governments can focus on sustainably managing forests, integrating ecosystem and biodiversity values into national and local planning, and conserving and sustainably using biodiversity and ecosystems, among other things.

And you might be wondering: how do the United Nations know if they're reaching their goals? Well, each goal has specific targets and indicators that countries track to measure progress. For instance, for goal thirteen on climate action, countries commit to reducing their carbon footprint. These targets are tracked through data collection and reporting, helping to ensure progress is being made and, if needed, adjustments can be implemented.

All this effort is being made because the planet needs everyone's help, more than ever. If you wanna help, you can start by learning more about the seventeen SDGs in the Agenda. Share this knowledge with friends and family. The more people who understand these goals, the more we can work together to achieve them. All these initiatives have one thing in common: to preserve our planet. It's important to keep in mind that we have the ability to change and enough time to make a difference! Pay attention to what politicians are ruling on climate change, be active in your community and make sustainable choices in your daily life. If we unite, we can all live better during this and the next generations. Take care!
