Let's start with Japan, a country known for its politeness and respect for traditions. In Japan, bowing is a common way to greet other people and it’s also a way to show respect. If you’re not comfortable with bowing, shaking hands is also perfectly acceptable, especially in more informal settings. However, when visiting a Japanese home, it’s important to take off your shoes before entering – so, make sure your socks are clean!

Don’t be surprised if you see your Brazilian workmates going to the restroom to brush their teeth after breakfast or lunch. In Brazil, the temperature can be very high, not just in summer but even in winter in some regions, so Brazilians often take multiple showers during the day to stay clean and refreshed.

Next on our list is the United States, where conversations revolve around annual salaries rather than monthly income. Did you know that? This practice provides an easier financial perspective and highlights the American value of planning for the long term. When we talk about Russia, social etiquette is marked by reserved behavior in public places. It isn’t normal to smile or greet strangers, which reflects a cultural preference for more formal and restrained interactions. In Russia, you should also be careful about flowers. Giving flowers in even numbers is typically reserved for funerals, and odd numbers are preferred for celebratory occasions. Count your flowers and think about where you are taking them to.

Moving on to China, if you finish all the food on your plate during a meal, hosts may have the impression they didn’t provide enough food, which can be seen as a subtle insult. To avoid this, always leave a small portion of food on your plate. Similarly, opening a gift in front of the giver may be considered impatient, making you look desperate. Wait until you aren’t in their presence to open it.

In the United Kingdom, standing in line is taken very seriously, and cutting in line is considered extremely rude. Tipping is not customary in British culture, particularly for services like waiting tables or taking taxis. While British people may complain about their lives or their country, it's important to avoid joining them and criticizing or complaining about local customs or practices as a visitor, since the locals might not appreciate it. They’re the only ones allowed to be unhappy with something in the UK.
