Endangered animals around the world
Biodiversity is very important for life on Earth. Due to climate change and habitat loss, some species are
becoming endangered, and this is happening to different species all around the world. Let’s get to know some
of the animals that are under severe risk of going extinct and are part of IUCN’s (International Union for
Conservation of Nature) Red List of Threatened Species.
Red Wolf (Canis rufus): this species of
wolf once lived freely in forests in the United States. Currently, their wild population is limited to
a recovery area in North Carolina. Red wolves communicate through a variety of behaviors such as
touch, smell and vocalizations.

Leopard (Panthera pardus): did you know
that Leopards are solitary animals? They like to spend time alone and will only come together when the
females are ready to mate, which can last from two to five days. This means that male leopards are not
involved in raising their cubs.

Baiji (Lipotes vexillifer): the baiji is an
aquatic mammal species found in China. These animals sleep while floating and are mostly blind due to
the cloudiness of the water where they live. Unfortunately, nobody has seen one of them in over 20
years. While listed as critically endangered by the IUCN, this species is likely to have already gone
extinct.

Corroboree frog (Pseudophryne corroboree):
Corroboree frogs are Australia’s most iconic amphibian and are the most spectacular looking frogs in
the world. They can live for up to nine years and grow to only 3 cm long! What endangers their lives
the most is a fungus disease called Chytrid fungus, warmer temperatures and
less rain and snow; the last three are consequences of climate change.

We are part of Earth's ecosystem. Our actions — such as deforestation, destroying natural habitats and land
degradation — have severely harmed our planet. Advocating for sustainable practices and protecting
biodiversity isn't just an issue to address; it's crucial for our own survival.
