The English language is spoken all around the world. It is in fact the largest spoken language on the planet
by number of speakers. Now, you will get to know some of the most prominent authors who have English as their
native language!
Kiran Desai: this author was born in 1971 in New Delhi, India. Her
mother is also a novelist named Anita Desai. She is very passionate about Indian culture and writes
about themes such as globalization, multiculturalism, fundamentalism and more. Her second novel,
The Inheritance of Loss, was published in 2006 and received worldwide
praise.

Oscar Wilde: this Irish poet and writer was born in 1854 and passed
away in 1900 at the age of 46. He produced many pieces of literature such as plays, reviews, essays
and poems. Wilde wrote only one novel, his most recognized work, titled The
Picture of Dorian Gray mentioning themes of beauty, duplicity and decadence.

Chinua Achebe: born in 1930 in Nigeria, Chinua Achebe is an author of
remarkable importance: he is considered the central figure of modern African literature. He dabbled in
many genres of literature, writing poems, novels, short stories, essays and more. He passed away in
2013, aged 82.

Maya Angelou: this American author was born in 1928 in the United
States and has become part of civil rights history. She is famous for her autobiographical poems and
memoirs depicting her life and the struggles, desires and needs of black women. She died in 2014 at
the age of 86.
